MANITOULIN ISLAND

This weekend we headed to Manitoulin Island with Jim and Dianne. Manitoulin is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world ( WOW!!!) It also contains the largest freshwater lake on the largest freshwater island in the world .......

Access was via Tobermorry ( 1.5 hrs north and then a 2 hour ferry trip). The sunset was spectacular as we arrived Friday night. On Saturday morning we began exploring the island visiting various points of interest and studied the birdlife (Jim is an avid birder).

The highlight today was Misery Bay which a World Heritage listed site for its rare and significant environment. It is an "alvar", a creation of the ice age cosisting of granite slabs ground flat by glaciers and containing lots of fossils ( see fossilised brain coral in photo). It supports a unique and hardy range of plants and animals.

Another highlight was attending "Oktoberfest" ( in September) in Gore Bay, where we spent the night. A meal of wiener schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut was followed by various musical acts and several beverages. We are pictured with Klaus, complete with lederhosen!

Sunday we continued our explorations with the highlight being a hike on the "Cup and Saucer Trail". The views were magnificent especially with the autumn colours starting to change. We looked over the largest lake in the largest ...... Fantastic!!

GO HAWKS!!!!
