DEAD SKUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD ...

If you remember the novelty song from the 70's, you might appreciate this.

Here's different blog entry topic - roadkill!! Every trip we take we see roadkill: racoons are common and we have seen evidence of a deer being hit. Once we removed a turtle from the road ( well done Ron!) but by far the largest number are skunks! As we are driving along, all of a sudden someone will groan "skunk!" and sure enough, the car will fill with the pungent aroma of skunk. It doesn't matter if the windows are up, or whether it's obviously been dead a while, that smell still gets in! Sometimes we don't even see them, we just smell them. They smell so bad even the turkey vultures, the usual roadkill cleaner-uppers, won't touch them.

We luckily haven't seen a live skunk yet, which is good because many of them are infected with rabies. Dogs are the greatest casualties ( sprayed not bitten)and I had a student at a school I was at tell me his dog had been sprayed. The smell is impossible to remove, with many remedies recommended but none that actually work. The most popular are bathing in tomato juice, washing with hydrogen peroxide ( I laughed at the visual of bleached-blonde dogs running around), and shaving bald. All in all, I bet the dogs wish they had left the skunks alone!!
