All around Ontario there are lots of Fall Fairs going on where communities are showcasing their agriculture. Sydenham Community School ( where I teach ) is the last school in Ontario that still has its own Fall Fair. Years ago the fair was at the school and animals were bought to the fields outside the school to be judged. This was the first year that the fair was at the Grey Roots Museum. The children rotated through alot of activites to do with their heritage such as visiting a farmhouse, learning about a steam train engine, playing pioneer games and having a wagon ride. They also had a chance to look at exhibits the children had entered in the fair such as cake baking, bird house making, cub cars, card making, flower decorating, vegetable displays etc. One of the girls in my grade entered about 8 items. They were given ribbons for 1st to 6th. Lastly some children entered their animals in competitions that were judged( see photos). I felt like I was at a mini Royal Melbourne Show!!!!
At school we also had to enter grade items. Each of my children made pioneer homes out of popsicle sticks for the craft section, did some handwriting, decorated a display board about Fall and made apple crisp. Yes Apple Crisp! Now you might be as confused as I was intitially about what Apple Crisp was. I asked teachers for a recipe but soon realised everyone was very competitive and did not want to give away their recipes. I was told to look on the internet!! I asked someone at a shop to show me what it looked like and realised it was like our Apple Crumble. I quickly rang my sister, Nat and asked for the family recipe. I named it Australian Apple Crisp. We won second prize!!! Two ladies came into our class and ate some of our crumble and then left us with a ribbon. The children loved eating it especially with the ice-cream I provided!!!! I think I am getting the hang of this country life!!!!
