Our day in Juneau turned out to be a washout so our next port was Skagway, the legendary frontier town at the head of the Chilcoot Trail, over which miners had to pass in order to reach the Yukon's goldfields. It was a "wild -west" type town in it's day and a very interesting place to visit with a fascinating history of the miner's struggles to cross the coast mountains to get to the goldfields. Tracy's dad Bill was particularly taken with the Red Onion Bar and Brothel!
Thankfully we took the White Pass Railroad to the town of Fraser ( more US customs) and then swapped the train for mountain bikes for the ride back to Skagway. The ride was basically a 15 mile descent from White Pass. In addition to the cold weather, the altitude made it an even colder ride back as we swept down the mountain, stopping to look at the magnificent scenery along the way
